Kathmandu, July 3, 2025 – The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) has officially announced the ninth edition of its flagship event, Power Summit 2025, scheduled to take place on September 17–18, 2025 (Ashoj 1–2) in Kathmandu. The announcement was made during a press conference today, where IPPAN extended a warm welcome to media representatives and shared key highlights and ambitions of the upcoming international event.
Held under the theme “Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region,” the summit will focus on driving Nepal’s energy sector to meet its ambitious target of generating 28,500 megawatts by 2035, a significant leap from the current installed capacity of 3,602 MW.
Private Sector’s Pivotal Role in Energy Development
Since the enactment of the Electricity Act 1992 (2049 B.S.), Nepal's private sector has played a transformative role in the hydropower sector. Today, independent power producers (IPPs) contribute more than 80% of Nepal's total electricity production, generating approximately 2,900 MW. In just 25 years, the private sector has mobilized over Rs. 1,300 billion in investments and is poised to invest up to Rs. 5,000 billion in future projects.
Currently, private sector-led projects with a capacity of 4,200 MW are under construction, with an additional 4,100 MW in the pipeline pending financial closure after signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Government and International Partnership
The Power Summit 2025 will be organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, with India as the Country Partner, facilitated through the Embassy of India in Nepal. The event will bring together national and international stakeholders to support the Energy Development Roadmap–2081, which envisions an additional 25,000 MW of energy generation over the next decade.
Distinguished attendees will include the Honourable Prime Minister of Nepal, high-level government officials, international dignitaries, energy experts, and representatives from a wide range of sectors including development agencies, financial institutions, academic institutions, consulting firms, and construction companies.
A Global Platform for Dialogue and Action
More than 1,000 participants from over 30 countries are expected to attend Power Summit 2025, continuing the legacy of successful editions held in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2023. The Summit will serve as a dynamic platform for:
Debating energy policies and sharing success stories
Discussing innovative financial mechanisms
Promoting green and clean energy solutions
Encouraging cross-border electricity and carbon trading
Enhancing regional connectivity through infrastructure
Addressing climate change and disaster resilience
Supporting Nepal and South Asia’s net-zero emission targets
A Call for Collaboration
IPPAN expressed confidence that the summit will further establish Nepal as a green energy leader in the region, contributing not just to domestic energy security but also to sustainable development in South Asia.
In conclusion, IPPAN thanked the press and media for their continued support and urged collective cooperation to make Power Summit 2025 a resounding success.
